WILD ANIMALS AND WHERE THEY CAN BE FOUND IN NIGERIA!!!

Nigeria Wildlife And Where To Find Them. by publisher: 11:50pm On Jan 20
ELEPHANTS: Nigeria has the highest number of Elephants in West Africa. As at 2008 they numbered well over 1000. Yankari National park has the highest concentration of Elephants in Nigeria. Elephants also occur at Okomu wildlife park (Edo), Cross-River National Park, Migratory herds are sometimes spotted at Gashaka-Gumpti National Park, Omo-Oluwa Shasha Park (Ondo)

LIONS: Officially, there are less than 50 distinct West African Lions left in the Nigeria wild. They can be found at Kainji Lake National Park (Niger/Kwara) and Yankari National Park. Unofficial sitings of Lions have been recorded at forest reserves within Benue/Enugu axis. A vibrant Lion population once existed at Gashaka Gumpti National Park but they were recently wiped out by Fulani herds men who poisioned them in revenge for killing their cattle. The herdsmen simply laced chunks of meat with poison and placed them at strategic areas in the park where Lions are known to appear. (Government did nothing)

GIRAFFES: The last indigenous Nigerian Giraffe was killed at a village in Old Gongola State sometime in 1987/88. However, reports of migratory Giraffes from National Parks in Western Cameroun have been recorded at Gashaka Gumpti National Park (Adamawa/Taraba). Borno state for centuries had a large Giraffe population but they are all practically extinct today. New Giraffe populations have re-emerged in Southern Niger republic and as their population grows one hopes a few may migrate back to Nigeria in future (and hope they wont be slaughtered)

HIPPOPOTAMOUS: Nigeria has a rather vibrant but under-reported Hippo population, especially the Pigmy Hippo. During the devastating floods of 2012,many Nigerians woke up to find Hippos sharing their living room with them. Hippos can be found in several waterholes in Zamfara, Kaduna,Kebbi,Bauchi,Benue, Cross River and Edo.

CROCODILES: They are very common and can be found in most states across Nigeria.

BUFFALO: A vibrant herd of Bufalos can still be found in Kainji Lake National Park and Old Oyo National Park. Scattered Populations can still be found in Bauchi, Cross River, Benue and Ondo.

LEOPARD: Some populations still exist at CrossRiver National Park and Gashaka Gumpti National Park.
