dental problem even after brushing their teeth on a regular basis. This is because the brushing
methods which they followed are incorrect. Mentioned below are some of the improper brushing habits which are followed by people commonly:
1. Wrong Duration
Most of the time people are in a hurry to finish
brushing as soon as possible, either because they're rushing to get to work or ready to collapse into bed. If you are one
amongst them then it is not surprising that brushing has become painful to you. You need to brush for at least 2-3 minutes. It takes that much time to concentrate on all the surfaces and the gums to clean them. Place a timer in the brushing area. Set the alarm for not less than 3 minutes, it will help you keep a track of the time. You could also make use of an electric brush and set the timer of the brush.
The amount of time that you take to brush you teeth is vital. Do not be in a hurry to finish it off quickly.
2. Not Watching What You Are Doing
It is advised to watch while you brush. You can
place a mirror in your brushing area. Failing to do so can prevent you from brushing at the right places. People usually fail to brush the area near the gum line. By not cleaning that surface tartar, bacteria and plaque can build up easily. The gums become inflamed when bacteria thrive on it. By looking in the
mirror while brushing you can come across dental problems yourself. You will able to notice issues like chips, cracks, over shiny teeth etc. If you notice any then do not fail to mention them at your next dentist visit.
3. Wrong Brush
The wrong tooth brush is the one whose bristles are too hard. Choose a brush with soft or medium bristles which are in arranged in different directions. Using an electric tooth brush is a good option as it does not only watch the time but also concentrates on the different areas. The Cochrane
report has shown that Electric toothbrushes are more effective than manual brushing.
4. No Flossing
Brushing should be followed by flossing. Failing to do so can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Flossing helps to clean the area between the teeth. If left unclean then the bacteria thrive in between the space leading to dental disease. Make flossing a part of your daily dental care routine if you wish to
keep the growth of bacteria in your mouth at bay.
5. Incorrect toothpaste
You should look into the ingredients of the
toothpaste before you purchase it. High content of baking soda no doubt helps in removing stains but too much of it can lead to deterioration of the enamel. The whitening toothpastes cause no harm to the teeth. Toothpaste should have between 1300-1500ppm, check the label.
6. Error In Technique
The right brushing technique is also important. Do not apply too much pressure on the surface as it can harm the enamel. The enamel covers the surface of the teeth and is made up of glass like material. When too much pressure is applied on it, it can lead to weakening of the teeth. Hold the brush in such a manner that the bristles are at a degree of 45 degrees from the surface of the teeth and brush
gently. Concentrate on a few teeth at a time. The most important tip is to brush in circular motions. Never forget to brush the gum line area.
7. Applying Too Much Pressure
Aggressive brushing can be very harmful to the teeth and the gums. When you brush to hard the chances of enamel loss goes up. Also when you apply too much pressure while brushing the gum line it leads to notches in the area which is referred to as abfraction lesions. Continuous pressure can damage the inner surface of the teeth. The gum can also recede due to the trauma.
8. Rinsing
Most people rinse the toothpaste from their teeth after brushing. However leaving the toothpaste coating on your teeth can have a beneficial effect on your oral health. The fluoride has a chance to penetrate the tooth surface.
9. Using A Mouthwash
Mouthwash should be used at a different time to brushing. There is only so much fluoride that the teeth and gums can take up in one go. You can make use of a mouth wash for rinsing the mouth. Make use of alcohol free mouth wash. The fluoride content of the fluoride mouth wash can help to destroy the bacteria completely. After using the mouthwash you should NOT rinse.
10. Cleaning Your Toothbrush
It is important to keep your tooth brush clean. As it cleans the bacteria from the surface of the teeth those bacteria then get stuck on to the bristles. Once in a while you should clean the bristles with hot water. Always allow the bristles to dry completely. It is also important to change the brush when the bristles get damaged. It is best to change
it every three months. By concentrating on the corrective measures you can maintain your dental hygiene.
Stay healthy!!!!
