Till death do us part: 14-year-old bride poisons groom, others in Kano



A teenage bride in Kano who was to be forced into marriage has allegedly ended the life of her proposed groom.

14-year-old Wasila Umaru is said to have served food laced with a local rat poison, known as Shinkafan Bera (Rice for rats), to 35-year-old Umaru Sani, who was her husband to be, 3 others identified as Nasiru Mohammed, Alhassan Alhassan and Indo Ibrahim and 10 unidentified victims.
The incident occurred in Ungwar Yansoro in the Gaya Local Government Area of the state and the 4 above named people lost their lives while the other 10 have been discharged from the hospital.
Wasila is said to have stated that she poisoned Umaru because she didn’t love him.

She reportedly laced the food she prepared for her husband and his friends with the substance.
Two of the victims- Nasiru Mohammed and Alhassan Alhassan of Yansoro Kademi- died on the spot. The third victim, a woman, Indo Ibrahim, died in the hospital.
Ten other people, who also ate the food, have been discharged from the hospital.
The suspect reportedly confessed to the crime, claiming that she did it because she was forced to marry a man she didn’t love.
Police spokesman Musa Magaji Majiya said the bodies had been taken to the hospital for autopsy.
