After several adjournments, the trial of a senior staff of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Ikotun branch, Adesanmoye Kehinde, who allegedly set his lover, Janet Edogba, ablaze for jilting him, has began at EjigboMagistrate’s Court, Lagos State, western Nigeria.
It was alleged that the 43-year old married man in anger that Janet, 31, broke up with him, poured petrol on her and set her ablaze before he fled the scene of the incident.
Kehinde, who hails from Ondo State, has three children while Janet, an indigene of Delta State, had a failed relationship before she met the suspect.
Narrating what happened at the court, Janet admitted that she dated Kehinde who promised to marry her but had to quit the relationship because he was troublesome.
Janet said when she told Kehinde that she was no longer interested in the relationship, he threatened to deal with her but she did not take the threat seriously.
According to the victim, the suspect attacked her when she was on her way to a friend’s house.
Janet said when he left her house at Olaoluwa Street in Abaranje, Ikotun, she didn’t know he was trailing her until she got to Ikotun Roundabout, when he suddenly appeared from nowhere and poured petrol on her before he set her ablaze.
Although Janet was rescued and rushed to a hospital where she has been on admission, she suffered severe burns and is still in critical condition.
Kehinde was later arrested and charged to court on a two-count charge under Sections 243 and 244 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, ASP Nicholas Atunmonye, objected to his bail.
Atunmonye told the court that Kehinde was callous to have set the woman ablaze.
He added that if he was allowed to go, it will send a wrong signal to the society, especially when the victim was still lying critically ill at the hospital.
It was learnt that the suspect was later granted bail, but he was unable to meet the bail conditions. The matter was adjourned till 19 May, 2015 for continuation of trial.
